I was coaching my boys’ soccer team, and they’re at the age now where they can really drive through the ball. Real leg speed, real power off the laces. What they didn’t have yet was the setup underneath it: a plant foot placed next to the ball, a locked ankle, a lean into the shot, a follow-through aimed at the target. They’d skip straight to full power and let the rest sort itself out, and I’d watch the ball sail three feet wide, or over the bar entirely, while I stood in goal wondering whether to be impressed or to duck.
So we changed the game. Score and it’s 2 points. Get the shot saved or blocked and it’s 1 point. Miss the goal altogether, and it’s minus 1. Not zero. Minus 1.
Something shifted almost immediately. They stopped going for maximum power on every shot and started actually looking at the goal before they kicked. The plant foot landed in the right spot next to the ball. The ankle locked instead of staying loose. The follow-through pointed at the target instead of wherever the leg happened to end up. And, counterintuitively, they got faster, not slower, once they weren’t wasting motion on shots that were never going in anywhere. Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.
The Rule That Changed What They Were Optimizing For
The mechanism wasn’t complicated, but it’s worth naming precisely, because it’s the part that transfers straight into a business context. A flat reward system, points for a goal and nothing else, would have kept them going for maximum power on every shot, because a miss and a near-miss cost exactly the same: nothing. Adding a real, negative cost to missing the net entirely changed the math. Now a wild, ambitious shot that missed wasn’t a neutral non-event. It was actively worse than a modest, accurate shot the goalie stopped cold.
That’s the part of the game doing the actual work, and it maps onto a well-documented finding in behavioral economics: people don’t weigh a loss and an equivalent gain the same way. Losses are treated as roughly twice as psychologically heavy as a same-sized gain, a finding that traces back to Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky’s prospect theory research.1 A flat point-for-a-goal system rewards the win. A system that also penalizes the miss makes not missing the thing people actually organize their effort around, and that turns out to be a far stronger lever than the reward alone.
Where “Slow Is Smooth” Actually Comes From

The phrase gets attached to Navy SEAL training culture almost by default now, and it's easy to see why: it's a core teaching during selection courses where lethal weapons make a rushed, sloppy motion far more costly than a slightly slower, correct one.[^2] But no single person actually coined it. It's collective wisdom, passed down and relabeled by whichever institution needed it most at the time.
The idea itself is much older than any modern training manual. The Roman historian Suetonius recorded that Augustus Caesar’s favorite sayings included festina lente, “hasten slowly,” and that “what has been done well has been done quickly enough.” Centuries later and an ocean away, the gunfighter Doc Holliday reportedly gave the same advice in four different words: take your time in a hurry.2 Different eras, same discovery, made independently by people whose mistakes were unusually final: rushing doesn’t make you faster. It makes you sloppier, and sloppier is what actually costs you the time you were trying to save.
Why the Miss Mattered More Than the Goal
There’s a second thing happening underneath the incentive shift, and it’s about what kind of practice the new rule actually produced. Anders Ericsson spent a career studying what separates experts from everyone else who’s put in comparable hours, and his conclusion wasn’t that experts have some innate gift. That’s what the scoring rule actually built, without either of us calling it that. Before the rule, every shot was the same undifferentiated rep: full power, no setup, see what happens. After the rule, every shot generated a specific, immediate number that said exactly how it went, and that number was uncomfortable enough on a miss that it demanded attention. The boys weren’t practicing “soccer” anymore in some vague sense. They were practicing the one component that was actually broken, the plant foot, the locked ankle, the follow-through toward the target, because the feedback loop made it impossible to ignore.
Where Are Your Team’s Last Ten Shots Landing?
What would have happened if the boys had just settled for scoring 1 point over and over? We’d never have won the games we did win. The same gap shows up in business: an incentive system that only rewards “safe and on target” caps a team at competent, and competent doesn’t win anything on its own.
Run this same scale over a stack of anything your team has shipped recently, a proposal, a release, a pitch, a client deliverable, and most of it won’t land on either extreme. It’ll cluster in the middle: competent, on target, nothing anyone would call a failure, and also nothing that moved the business the way a real goal would have. That middle zone is comfortable precisely because it’s not penalized under most teams’ actual incentive structures. Nobody gets in trouble for a save. The problem is that a team that only ever produces saves never gets the compounding benefit of a goal, and never generates the sharp, specific feedback a genuine miss provides either. It just idles.
The Business Version of Missing the Net
Quibi is the cleanest recent example of a company optimizing for power over aim. It raised $1.75 billion, built a genuinely sophisticated piece of proprietary technology in “Turnstyle,” which let a video reformat seamlessly between portrait and landscape, and signed real Hollywood talent. What it never did was validate the fundamental it was actually betting on: that people wanted premium, short-form, mobile-only video, in a market where free platforms like TikTok and YouTube already owned that exact behavior. The company launched in April 2020, during a lockdown that erased the on-the-go viewing moments the whole product was built around, and folded roughly six months later.4 Every dollar of that budget went toward polish. None of it went toward confirming the net was actually there before taking the shot.
Contrast that with two organizations that built their reputations on the opposite discipline. Toyota’s production system treats standardized work, the single codified “right way” to do a task, as the precondition for kaizen, not a competing priority to it. You can’t reliably improve a process until the fundamental version of it is stable enough that a deviation from it is even visible.5 And Amazon’s founding 1997 shareholder letter, and everything the company has said about staying in “Day 1” since, isn’t a growth story about scale. It’s a discipline story: a small, fixed set of fundamentals, obsess over the customer, measure what works, cut what doesn’t, applied with enough consistency that scale became something that could compound on top of it.6
Leadership research keeps landing on the same uncomfortable finding from the other direction: chasing “perfect” barely correlates with actually being effective, and several leadership analysts go further, arguing that perfectionism itself produces the tangible costs, time delays, cost overruns, and missed commitments, that leaders assume they’re avoiding by refusing to ship anything less than flawless.7 The teams optimizing for “perfect” and the teams optimizing for “power” are making the same mistake in different clothes. Both are aiming at an outcome they haven’t actually validated is on target, and calling the size of the effort a substitute for checking.

The boys learned fast that racking up 1-pointers was easy: keep the shot controlled, get it on target even if it got saved, and the points still added up. That’s where the confidence started. Once they trusted the setup, plant foot, locked ankle, follow-through, they noticed something else: the actual goal, not the safe save, was what got them to the win total faster, and by then they had the form to go get it. So the shots got harder on purpose, farther out, more pace behind them, real power layered back on top of a plant foot and a follow-through that no longer broke down under the extra speed. When it clicked, it clicked.
By the end of that game, the boys weren’t taking fewer shots or more cautious ones. They were taking faster, harder shots that went in more often, because the wasted motion, the part of the kick that was never actually contributing to accuracy, had quietly disappeared. Nobody told them to slow down. The scoring did that on its own, by making the one thing that mattered, landing on target, cost something real when they skipped it.
Most businesses chasing “the perfect product” are still skipping the setup, optimizing for how much power they can put behind the shot instead of whether it’s going to land anywhere near the net. The fix isn’t lowering ambition. It’s building a scorecard that makes a miss cost more than a modest, accurate attempt earns, and trusting that speed shows up on its own once the aim is real.
